RAILWAY SMOKE NUISANCE.
It is very difficult to understand the report of Mr. G. *H. Mackley, general manager of railways, re the smoke nuisance, as it clearly shows * that he has been quite misinformed regarding the present intolerable conditions. That such an extraordinary report should have been forwarded to the City Council is beyond one's comprehension. Mr. Mackley also states that after investigation he has been advised that this smoke nuisance from the railway yards has been considerably reduced in recent years, etc. This is not correct; on the contrary, it has considerably increased, and the smoke is so dense at times that the residents of Sclwyn Terrace, Parnell (being in close proximity to the station) are compelled to close their windows, etc., in order to protect themselves from this insufferable nuisance. Taking even these precautions, the smoke invariably enters the houses and permeates and pollutes the whole atmosphere. A most unhealthy condition, to be forced to endure. We- trust these long-standing complaints will receive attention and early action to rid us of this unhealthy state of affairs. It would be well for a responsible official to investigate this important matter, especially when the railway yards are busy aixd the engines.are belching forth black, gritty smoke from sheds and railway platforms. I am sure all the residents of the lower end of Parnell, and especially in Selwyn Terrace, will thank our worthy Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, for taking up this matter in the interests of health and all await the verdict after Mr. Schramm has had an opportunity of stating the case in Parliament. A VICTIM.
