GRAPHIC STORY TOLD.
Ship Wrecked on W. Australian Coast. ANXIOUS FOUR HOURS' WAIT. (Received 11.30 a.m.) PERTH, this day. A graphic story of the wreck of the Danish-built, Norwegian-owned motorship Stanford, 011 African Reef, on the West Australian coast, was given by her master, Captain Becli, who arrived at Fremantle by the Koolinda with other members of the crew and passengers. Captain Bech said the Stanford went on the reef at 9.40 on Wednesday night. Heavy rain was falling and there was a dense haze, obscuring Point Moore lighthouse. The sea was rough. Efforts to move the ship astern failed. Every now and again she lifted up and smashed down on the reef. All hands were called on deck and the lifeboats were prepared. "After four hours of anxious waiting 011 the ship, which might have crumbled beneath us," said Captain Bech, "the Koolinda arrived. One boat rowed off from the Stanford and another from the Koolinda." Captain Been was last to leave. He took the ship's papers and the ship's cat and three kittens, but everything else was lost. He thinks the Stanford will become a total wreck.
