TAKANINI YEARLINGS.

FINELY BRED LOT. BWGE HAVING RESPITE. HUSKIE AND BALLYMONEY. . With a lull in fast work at Takanini most interest is being centred in the progress of the yearlings undergoing preparatory work. They represent a finely bred lot, and appearances suggest they will make their mark in next season's juvenile events. The strength of the stables is as follows: — W. S. Jarvis: Cli c by Chief Ruler— Prestige, b c by Lord Warden—Full Swing, ch c by Limond—Drastic, br c by Hunting Song—Haligan, br c by Hunting Song— Smoke Concert. D. J. Burgess: b c by Excitement—Restful, b c by Heroic—Lady Graceful, b c by Silverbum —Sundance, , br c by Baralong— Nobility. C. Morse: B c Elange, by Posterity— Impetuous; br c Love Parade,.by Nightlnareh—Pride; br c Bowyang, by Lord Warden —Molten. • *-' v J. W. Catliro: B f by King Lu —Elnona, br c by Vaals—Big Bertha.; .. . .-- P. E. Pope: Br.,Vc I Bachelor King, by. Lapidary—Lady Louie;. .. .. _ .: • "•* A. Tinker: Br f Feldberg, .by Backward— Humurada. .V: " -W. H. Patterson: Ch c Sacconi, by Surveyor—Adi Vunivola. I. Tucker: Ch f by Sargon—Picture. . With the exception of the youngsters in Burgess'- and Cathro's stables the remainder have been in regular attendance on the tracks for some weeks, and all are progressing satisfactorily. Enge has been given a respite, following his narrow defeat by Lagoon in the Opotiki Cup last Tuesday. His stake earnings in this event enabled, him to slightly exceed Nun Nicer's total for the season, thereby giving him premier position among the Takanini stake-earners during the season. Erige has been a vety- consistent performer, considering that lieeri racing continuously for tw.elfe' months, but 'his future will depend' on his overcoming a wind -.infirmity, which -has been very noticeable during recent morithe.i In beating all but Little; .Ruse •in the Novice Handicap, on Tuesday, Joyzelle made a creditable showing, which was: in direct contrast to her best- track efforts prior to the meeting. ••• V ,- ! Sent Home. C; r v "

Poker Face lias been sent'home to'his owner after racing at Opotiki, .wliefe' he made his debut. Probably next season may find The Ace gelding- being seen to better advantage, as he lacks racing experience. •:

Huskie and Bally money are two others * of W. Cathro's team to'be eased up for an indefinite period. The former's form on the fiat of late has been fairly good, without getting the thick end of the purse, and if tried again' later may pay his way, but Ballymoney has been a continued disappointment on the flat, and his initial attempt over fences on Tuesday was not too encouraging. He had given some good exhibitions in. schooling, only to disappoint' with the' colours up. Royal Passage has been displaying plenty of dash in his work and has had the benefit of several months' work without being called upon to race.' The Ace gelding is a rising three-year-old, who may quickly earn distinction., C. Walters,,who has not-been following his calling for the last-few 'months, has again returned fo'E. Pope's stable. rWalters has ridden successfully over fences. The Lapidary—Spadona filly Lapis Lazuli, has rejoined P. Smith's active team, hiving enjoyed .-a-spell -since -tfie autumn. • In the. few races she contested this season she showed plenty of speed, but failed to run on. However, she has grown considerably since: -last seen, and at an advanced age may become more solid. W. S. Jarvis has commenced a preparation of Latharna and Yerrapai, by Limond and Magpie, respectively. Both are as yet : in the rough, having been out of commission .for some time. Improvement (Chief Ruler-—Nasselle), who has been an absentee from the tracks for a few weeks, has also returned to the list of active workers. Acquitted Himself Well. On the two occasions Maori Song has been , sprinted he has acquitted himself fairly well, though there is still room for improvement in his condition. Maori Song is bred on the right lines, being by Hunting Song—Maungakino,»the latter being a granddaughter of Carbine. Since his arrival here the Gay ShieldPicture colt Gay Talkie has been going along very satisfactorily, and he bears £ very bright appearance. At p-esent he is carrying more condition . than,-when seen last season, and if his present ; ratios of progress is maintained he sliduld- 'flo good, service to his trainer, I. -•'iiiexfc term. The rising three-year-old by" Te Monanui, in the same stable, is also shaping up, but' to all appearances^'.will require time and racing before, the Best will be seen of her. Rising, Tide Ace—Night Gambler gelding-in .Wt'-H, Patterson's stable were given their ovei? a of furlongs earlierV'in the week, < and their; subsequent work in both instances has: revealed more dash than formerly.':vßffth are rising three-year-olds, who in'> due course" should be found acquittiiig themselves creditably. The disappointing efforts of Spear'c'ourt; on a soft track last week were responsible for his ■ non-appearance at the Opotiki meeting. The Spear Dance gelding has been disappointing after having been given every chance by his connections, and it is more than likely that in the very near he will be given a course of schooling, with a view to joining the ranks of hurdlers. He is built on the right lines to make a hurdler aid may make , amends in this department. - 'C

Apparently Recovered:C. Morse's pair, Merry Lap and Wait and See, who were both injured at Te Rapa, have made a reappearance, and in both cases a recovery seems to have been made. Merry Lap is a successful hurdler, who severely cut a tendon in an engagement, but the leg appears tolifaye- recovered and no signs of soreness' yet been noticed. Wait and Se'e -.received: a nasty cut below the elbow of the near front leg, and she also is working with freedom in light tasks. Both Emancipation and The Hiker returned from the Opotiki meeting looking little the worse for their exertions. They each, gained a place in the steeplechase, but either may have won had the obstacles been more formidable, - Emancipation is likely to be taken to' Wellington next month, and while no definite plans have been made for The Hiker, it is possible that a trip to the Poverty Bay meeting may eventuate. Among others making good progress in their respective tasks are Flood Tide and Surella (who both look exceptionally well), Choice, Thurwind, Doric Star, Lord Willonyx, a Lvsander gelding, Kaiwaka, Warwick Lad, Dutiful, Palustre, Anion and the Yaals —Mary Catmint gelding.

A LIKELY IMPROVER.

As the result of his good showing in the Borough Handicap at the Wanganui meeting last week Bantry will have: plenty of supporters the next time lie,, faces the starter. When raced earlier in fthe«season Bantry's form /.was"' decidedly;'ipromising. but he did not' make the -improvement anticipated by his connections.. As this hack' is not averse to heavy going he may do better before the winter period ends.
