THE VACANT SPACES.

(To the Editor.)
I heartily agree with the views expressed in the letter from •C. E. Clifton. It is time oui* people woke up to the fact that if we wish to keep our country something will have to be done to that end, and the sooner we face the fact that 111 the future there will be bi"ger troubles ahead of us, than the subjects "which have been so much discusscd in letters recently the better. In regard to immigration, as mentioned by C. E. Clifton, I would Only add that of course it would be necessary to <Vet the right type of immigrant. One fact that C. K Clifton could have mentioned was that we are helping to bring about the trouble —or rather the tragedy—that Major Ponder savs is in store for us by buying certain classes of Japanese goods. Our ancestors toiled too hard to make this country what it is for us easy-going younger ones "to let it slip a'wav from us, and we should not help others to raise money to bring about our own downfall. It is time we of New Zealand put aside the petty problems for the serious. I.A.W. i
