SPEED LIMITS.
MOTOR CYCLES BILL. DECISION OF ASSOCIATION. The Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill was discussed at a special meeting last evening of the Automobile Association (Auckland). It was decided to urge that the present rule regarding driving to the common danger be adhered to in preference to the imposition of any new speed limit. A number of remits to the North Island Motor Union were passed. All representations to the Government will be made by tlie union. The president, Mr. A. Grayson, said with the exception of two clauses, the hill, consisted of crystallised remits sent to the Commissioner of Transport in recent years by the two motor unions. The contentious clauses.were those providing for a 30 miles an hour limit in built-up areas and the "very vague" clause about inconsiderate driving. Mr. H. J. Butcher suggested that instead of a 30 miles an hour limit in built-up areas, limits should be imposed only in areas where the local body concerned made application to the Ministei for the limit. The chairman said if the bill became law there would be a 30 miles an hour limit in semi-rural city roads, in such places as Tamaki, where there was no traffic. Mr. ,T. Seabrook submitted the limit should be confined to actual built-up areas. The secretary, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, quoted official figures which showed that out of 243 fatal motor accidents in New Zealand last year, only 40 were caused through speeds held by the Courts to be excessive in the circumstances. Dissatisfaction was expressed with the clause about inconsiderate driving. The making of some specific rules for dealing with such cases was advocated in a remit to the union.
