THE CITY'S ARTERIES.
Very careful consideration should be given to the Mayor's proposal to exchange land at the civic centre for the whole of the Shortland Street Post Office site, in order to enable a wider street to be laid out than is at present proposed. The lines of arterial traffic in the city require the closest attention, and a comprehensive report on their development would be of value. Meantime, this new roadway will be of very * great value in relieving congestion in Queen Street, but as there will be a slight "dog-leg" with the connections at either end, the wider the street can be made, the easier will be exit and entrance. The balance left to the Government after the 40ft roadway has been dedicated will not be sufficient to fulfil all State requirement. The building will be so narrow, and the proportionate wastage on hallways, m-.j, stairways and other essentials so great, that only two-thirds of the actual floor space will lie available, and the number of Departments which can be housed within its limits will leave a very considerable carry-over for other areas. On the other hand; the Civic Square site will afford facilities for all Departments, with ample room for future expansion. Plans for the building on the new street site are no doubt well advanced, but there is yet time for serious consideration of the very promising alternative suggested by Mr. Davis.
