FORTY-BUSHEL CROP.
CANTERBURY WHEAT YIELD. RECORD THRESHING RETURNS. Commenting 011 the wheat threshing returns ior the period January-April, a Christcluirch merchant said that, to the best of his recollection the Canterbury average of 40.1«> bushels «in acre w<is a, provincial record, and that tlie Dominion average of .'3B.SG bushels an acre was certainly* «i record. Progress returns ioi the season's threshing were published by the (government Statistician' recently. These showed the Dominion total to_ be 5.014,005 bushels of wheat from 152,192 acres. " These figures leave about 88,000 acres to be threshed. ' the merchant added. •• Kven allowing for a portion of this area being damaged and some of it lost, thcic will bo a surplus of wheat this year. As far as the averages go they may be brought down bv the final figures. But it certainly seems that the yield for the Dominion will equal 0,000,000 bushels. This year's figures are greatly in advance of those for tho correspo. ng period last year. In 1033 the total for the threshing was almost 1.000.000 bushels fewer, | the average of 27.0!) bushels an acre was over 11 bushels under the average for 1936.
