NIGHT TRAINS.

(Sent in by Mny Donnlil, IS3, Cook Street. Palmcrston North ; age 13 years.) I love to licar the trains come past At night, when not a sound is ltearil. Like wind, across the stillness comes All engine's purring, first remote. Between its wooded banks it linnis With mounting rhythm to a note Of throbbing clamour. Then with shrill, Sharp shrieks lmrl'd to the sky it draws A Titan breath, and climbing still, It takes the tunnel —there's a pause—. And then a smothered droning sound That swells up to a sudden burst When, with a roaring clanking bound The trains leaps out again As down the hills it rushes 011 And on towards its distant goal, Round a far curve, and then is gone. — (Copied.)
