JAPANESE ENTERPRISE.
OVERTURES FROM TOKYO. AUCKLAND EXCHANGES VIEWS. Correspondence from the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce to the Auckland C'liamper points to an unusual turn taken by Japanese enterprise. All organised effort is foreshadowed in Tokyo to extend trade by developing existing overseas markets, and by opening new ones through negotiation with merchants and associations of other countries. The Tokyo Chamber has offered to provide information about Tokyo merchants, manufacturers and market conditions generally, and to collect posters, samples and catalogues.| Further, it will arrange for the translation of any commercial correspondence, and will do everything possible to foster trade expansion. A questionnaire was recently sent to the Auckland Chamber asking for information as to the effect of Japanese imports on local manufacturers, the opinions of local business men on the manner in which the trade is transacted, and whether there are any complaints about quality, trade marks, and packing. Information is also requested about the Dominion's export trade to Japan. The Auckland Chamber has replied fully to these questions, and has been advised that their replies have been circulated among Tokyo merchants; In their correspondence the Tokyo Chamber strongly denied any charge of dumping levelled against their exporters, and emphasised the benefit of good quality, cheap Japanese goods to overseas consumers. Moreover, the chamber stated that exports from Japan formed sn inconsiderable proportion of the world's trade, and hence there could be no grounds for complaints of an inundation of the world's markets by cheap Japanese goods.
