THE "GOD BEGOT."

INN WITH LONG HISTORY. WINCHESTER. One of England's most ancient feudal manors ,the "God Begot" Hotel here, dating back to the tenth century, no longer will be a mecca for overseas tourists. The hostel, which attracted hundreds of Americans arriving by boat at nearby Southampton, has been sold and will not be utilised as a hotel in the future. The half-timbered structure wa's conveyed to Queen Emma, free of all burdens, .by her husband, Aethelwd, and she in turn bequeathed it •to St. Switliin's monastery. The manor became a sanctuary for criminals and fugitives and held its own courts of justice until the reign of Henry VIII., when, it passed to the dean of Winchester Cathedral.
