WATERPROOF HATS.
TO BE WORN AT ASCOT. This year, Ascot hats will be weather proof. One designer is showing widebrimmed hats made from a British-made satin, printed with bright flowers and lacquered to make it waterproof. All Ascot hats will be wide-brimmed. Some, in the Gainsborough manner, are made of black velvet, curving haughtily over the face and trimmed with pink roses. One black Bankol; straw measured 25 inches across the brim. For trimming, it had three large water lilies balanced in front, into which were tucked three small celluloid dolls. One hat, called "French Elections," was of white straw, with a bold band of tricolour ribbon sweeping across its turned-up brim. If you favour a smaller hat, you may wear a toque of spotted cm tain muslin, or a net cap made on the lines of those austere confections worn by elderly Victorians in their own drawing rooms; or, if you are feeling gay, you may be equally in the mode in a tall-crowned hat of striped cotton, with a curly straw brim. .
