STABLE AND TRACK NOTES
NOT FOR SALE. j Tlie form displayed by Dark Shadow at the Great Northern meeting attracted the , attention of a southern sportsman, and an : effort was made to buy him, but his owner, : Mr. G. W. Vercoe, refused to put a price on him. •r--':. i OUT FOR A SPELL. The Great Northern Hurdle Race win-1 ner, Prince of Orange, struck himself while competing in the Remuera Hurdle Race on the concluding day of the Auckland meet-1 ing. In consequence he has had to be turned out for a brief spell and will not be raced at the Wellington meeting next month. A DOUBTFUL PROSPECT. Hostis, now a member of J. S. Shaw s team, has done a lot of ■useful woik at Riccarton, chiefly of the hacking order. He will be started soon on more strenuous tasks, and he may. be racing in August, provided he stands up. to the necessary preparation, which is far from certain, as bis legs seem to be doubtful. V ! SOUTHERN JUMPERS DOING WELL. The Smuggler and Umtali are reported to'be working well at Wingatui after their long trip to the Great Northern meeting. The former looks very bright and is said to be even better than when he went away. This pair, are freely engaged in lumping events at the Dunedm meeting, to be held on June 20, 23 and 24. STURDILY-BUILT YOUNGSTER. The rising two-year-old by Hauwiri from Wairama, who is in regular work at head; quarters, has had the name Mamitiri bestowed on him. He is a sturduj-built youngster, who is now beginning to look a bit shapely as the result of the work R. Olive has allotted him dliring the last few weeks. i A NOVICE CANDIDATE. Full o' Scotch was, raced at the Great Northern meetiug, but failed to get into the money. Since his return to ie Kapa j he is stated to have gone along well in his work and was responsible for a smart effort over five furlongs last week. He is engaged in the Novice Stakes, of similardistance, at Tauranga next Tuesday, and as the class is not a very strong one he is not without good prospects. A LIKELY IMPROVER. In his only start at the Auckland winter meeting Respectful ran unplaced, this being in the second division of the Jervois Handicap. He had galloped exceptionally - well a few days before the meeting, and maybe he was in need of. a race. The Raceful gelding is down to compete at the Opotilu meeting next week, where he figures in two events. It would, not sur- ■ prise to see him making ail improved showing at the country fixture.
ON EASY LIST. Jolly Beggar will be missing from the hurdle race at Trentham. He is to have an easy time, after his trip to Auckland, and he will make Ins next appearance at Riecarton in August. R. Beale, who rode him in his northern engagements, will again have the mount in the Grand National Hurdles. SUCCESSFUL IN SPRINT EVENT. After racing with considerable success over middle distances during the last three months, Pladie accounted for some smart sprinters, including Pakanui and Passion Flower, in the Final Handicap at the Hawke's Bay meeting last Saturday.' This mare, who is partial to heavy going, is expected to do well at the Wellington meeting next month, where, among other races, she will contest the Parliamentary Handicap. | FOR TRENTHAM. I Rival Shot is being got ready for the ! Wellington Racing Cluo's meeting next | month. She lias not come up to early expectations. Her mates on tlie trip may be the two-year-olds Recollection (Polazei I —Retrospect) and Thermidor (Robespierre —Lady Minerva)), neither of whom I ins | had any racing experience yet. The latter ; is owned by Mr. G. I\. Macdonald, while the other two arc the property of Sir Charles Clifford. WELL-BRED HACK. Blue Shirt, winner of the Havelock. Handicap at tl.p Hawke's Bay meeting on Saturday, is a well-bred three-year-old chestnut gelding by Garter Blue from j Chemise, by Multifid from Lady Augusta, ! by St. Leger from Brown Alice, a daughter of Ouida. Trained by C. J. Stowe at Hastings. Blue Shirt has notched two firsts and a third in his last three starts, and is evidently a smart galloper. He is a halfbrother to Head Serang and Royal Shift. I DOING GOOD WORK. ! Te Hai came through his racing at the Great Northern meeting in good shape and has been working well since that fixture, i Last Saturday morning, in company with 'Lord Val, he put up an excellent gallop on the No. 2 grass track at Ellerslie. being timed to traverse a circuit in 1.43 2-5. The time has seldom been beaten, and if Te Hai repeats the trial at the Opotiki meeting he should get his share of the stake money. He is engaged in two events—the. Opotiki Cup and the Farewell Handicap— , and so far it is not known which racp lie j will contest. TO RACE AT WANGANUI. i The two local horses Landlubber and I Teddy Boy left Ellerslie for Wanganui by train yesterday afternoon to fulfil engagements at the southern meeting. Both horses are in first-rate condition, and they should give a good account of themselves during the trip. Teddy Boy will race on the flat the first day, and all going well he will contest the May Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters, on the second day. Landlubber is engaged in hack sprint events each day, and as he is down at the bottom of the handicaps he can be relied' on to run good races. This horse is a proved mudlark, and if the going happens to be soft it will enhance his prospects | considerably. TO REAPPEAR NEXT WEEK. Travelling Agent, who has been off the scene for a long time, is due' to make his' reappearance at the Opotiki meeting next Tuesday, and if everything goes along all 'right with liim'it is the intention of F. .1. Tutchen to later race him at Trentham. Reports from Te'Rapa indicate that he is working along steadily. Travelling Agent proved himself a good hurdler last season, winning, among other races, the Pio Pio Hurdles at Te Rapa and the Panmure Hurdles at the Great Northern meeting, while he was narrowly beaten by Black Marlin in the Orakei Hurdles at the same fixture. Besides Travelling Agent, Tutchen intends to take Adalene and Phileniup to the Wellington fixture, and he will also take south with him Ma torn, who was recently disposed of to Mrs. D. Levin, of Christchurch.
