NEW WOMEN'S CLUB.
An address on the need of training for leisure and citizenship was given by Mrs. G. K. Pickett oil Friday afternoon in the clubrooms, Union Buildings. Modern technique, the speaker stated, Jiminislied the labour required to produce enough goods for all and the hours of labour could be reduced as compared with the pre-machine age, but education was needed for the right use of leisure so that man might be benefited mentally, morally and physically. All forms of energy were work and the education system should be remodelled with a view to teaching man how to live rather than how to work. Crafts, music, the drama, physical culture and the right use of play were all being introduced into the most modern schools to develop an appreciation of beauty, to permit of self-expression and to inculcate the principles of honour, duty, self-control and the sacrifice of the personal for the good of the whole. The address aroused considerable discussion. Mrs. Darlow presided. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Newcombe, H. A. Wild, A. E. Caslimore and 11. W. Archer.
