DOMESTIC'S LAPSE.
GAVE WAY TO TEMPTATION. PROBATION FOR THEFT. Tlie theft, on June 4, of a handbag valued at 5/ and £1S in money was admitted bv a domestic, Lilian Stewart, aged 19. when she appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court to-day. It was stated by Senior Detective Hall that the girl was employed in a boardinghouse in Carlton Gore Road. On June 4. while doing the sitting room, she found a lady's handbag c6ntaining £18, which, had, been left there." She took the bag from the house, extracted the money, and left the handbag in a telephone cabinet. When inquiries were first made about the handbag, she denied all knowelge of it, hut when seen by detectives on June 7 she admitted taking it. "She bought a gold "watch for £4. and deposited £5 in the Savings Bank," said Mr. Hall. "The jeweller has since taken tlie watch back and refunded the £4. while the money has also been withdrawn from tlie Savings Bank. All of the £13 except £2 9/ has been recovered. Nothing is previously known against this girl, who is said to be a •rood worker. Her mother is dead and her father resides at Coromandcl." Remarking that it was evident the «irl had given way to a sudden temptation. tlie magistrate admitted her to probation for two years and ordered restitution of £2 9/ to be made. He also directed that she was to remain with the Salvation Army until arrangements could be made to send her back home.
