CHURCH RALLY.
GIRLS' FRIENDLY SOCIETY. ANNUAL SERVICE HELD. From all parts of the city and suburbs members of the Girls' Friendly Society gathered at St. Mathew's Church last night, when the annual rally and service of the society were held. "I think there is far too little confidence to-day in the life and the teaching and the authority of the Church," said the Rev. G. V. Gerard in his address to the large congregation. "There is far too little loyalty to her organisations and her leaders. Because we live in a land of democracy, we are inclined to feel that we can take tilings up and drop them just when it happens to suit our own sweet will." He told the Old Testament story of Ruth, who had found inspiration in a sense of adventure, a sense of duty and in love. A special form of service had been printed for the occasion. Captain S. E. Grace, of the Church Army, sounded a call to worship, and in the course of the processional hymn banner-bearers presented the banners of the.society. Those were planed in the sanctuary until just before the close of the service, when they were returned to the bearers, who were blessed in the chancel. After the service visiting members of the society were entertained to supper by the parish branch.
