SAMOAN VIEWS.
STATEMENT OF CASE. COMMISSION AWAITED. NEWS BY LAST MAIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) APIA, June 4. European and Samoan planters, workingmen and traders are preparing to state their views and grievances to the New Zealand Commission of Investigation, consisting of the Hon. F. Langstone and Mr. J. O'Brien, M.P., who are expected to arrive by the Maui Pomare on June 23. Europeans are organising a Samoan branch of the Labour party. Their, main points of discussion with the New Zealand representatives will be the employment of local residents by the Administration and a land settlement scheme on Crown land. The Samoan Planters' Association and the Apia Chamber of Commerce will also present their views in conjunction with the elected members of the Legislative Council, the Hons. Smyth and Carrutliers. Horse Racing Popular. At the race meeting held by the Apia Turf Club on Whitsun Monday, June 1, which was favoured by exceptionally fine weather, excellent sport was offered to the record crowd of Europeans and Samoans, which filled the grandstand and the course. Horse racing, which for several years seemed to be on the decline, has undergone a revival and is attracting a lot of public interest. South Sea Sailor's Death. Another old resident of Apia has passed away in the person of Mr. Charles Fairholt. who died on June 3 at the age 'of 51 years. Mr. Fairholt, an American, of Danish descent, was an old South Sea sailor, who for long years was in the employ of Tvndill and Ross, of Nukualofa, Tonga, later of Captain Allen, of Funafuti, in the FJlice Group, and on the S.S. Dawn and afterwards on the Government steamer Lady of the Samoan Administration.
