ENGINEER'S DEATH.
MR. John HAYS HAMMOND
(Received 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, June 9. The death has occurred at Gloucester, Massachusetts, of Mr. John Hays Hammond, aged 81, world-famous mining engineer and unwilling participant in tlie Jameson Raid. His subsequent death fentence was commuted to 15 years' imprisonment and later was raised on Payment of a fine of £25,000. He was ■Special Ambassador and representative of President Taft at the coronation of king George V. in 1011. His son, of the same name, is a famous inventor.
