TRANSPORT DIFFICULTIES
Various phases of tlie work of the Melanesian Mission were interestingly ; dealt with by tlie-Bishop ,of Melanesia, the Rt. Rev. W. H. liaddeley, in an address delivered to a large audience at the Scots Hall last night. The bishop and Mrs. liaddeley were introduced by Archbishop Avcrill, who was chairman! and who also extended a welcome to Mr. J. A. Wilson, Melanesian representative 011 tlie New Zealand Board of Missions. Bishop Baddeley said that the worn of tlie mission was being gradually extended, but in his island diocese transport presented many difficulties. While the mission ship Southern Cross was employed throughout the year between the various islands, it was necessary also to make use of aeroplane services" to reach many outposts in New Guinea. From one native in lloiy Orders in 1871 tlie number had increased to about 70. The mission was doing considerable good work'ftriiong the .natives stricken, with leprosy. ' Bishop Baddeley said that in connection with the New Zealand General Synod to be held at Hamilton next year he hoped the Southern Cross would come to Auckland, bringing a number of native ministers. 111 expressing thanks to Bishop Baddeley for his address. Canon C. A. B. Watson moved a resolution pledging those present to renewed activity 011 behalf of mission work generally and the Melanesian Mission in particular. The resolution was carried. In a luncheon address Bishop Baddeley described the training of native clergy, but said that the white staff had diminished and a sacramental• religion could not be taught unless there were sufficient priests to provide the sacra- ' ments. Pupils of the Victoria Maori Girls' School rendered a number of songs prior to tlie address and a collection was made for the Melanesian Mission funds.
