FERRY TRAFFIC.
QUAY STREET SAFETY.
ONE CROSSING PLACE. ERECTION OF BARRIER. . To 'ensure the safety of pedestrians crossing Quay Street, to or from the 'Ferry Buildings, the City Council last night decided to erect a barrier to prevent pedestrians croseing at any other place than the portion marked off in white lines at the eastern end of the building, opposite the exit for passengers from the Devonport ferries. A proposal for the construction of a sub-way, made by Mr. F. W. Brander, had been turned down by the works committee, which had suggested to the legal and by-laws committee- that better facilities tie afforded to pedestrians crossing to and from the Ferry Buildings. The superintendent of traffic reported that wjiile the majority of pedestrians used' the crossing opposite the eastern entrance, passengers using the Birken-head-Northeote ferries invariably crossed diagonally from the western entrance to the foot of Queen Street. To bring pedestrian traffic under the control of the officer on point" duty, it would be necessary that all the pedestrians should use the crossing hiarked out in Quav Street. He therefore recommended that a barrier be erected on the kerb to'prcvent pedestrians crossing the road ■at other "than appointed place, and that the harrier consist of etanchions with a chain eb designed to enable the traffic officer to orect the barrier at times when pedestrian traffic is heavy. A removal barrier of this description would permit vehicles to load and unload at. the kerb without inconvenience, at the same time restraining persons from crossing the roadway indiscriminately.
The superintendent's recommendation was adopted.
