BRILLIANT DAYS.

EXTRAORDINARY MAY. RAINFALL UNDER AVERAGE. NO DAY WITHOUT SUN. The month of May has been extraordinary, according to the report of Mr. S. M. Yallop, official Government observer in Auckland—but it did not need a meteorologist to tell the man in the street that. Many Mays, it is likely, will have to come again before we have such a succession of gloriously fine days. Last May was called a dry month, and 4.24 in of rain fell. How, then, should last month be regarded, when only 1.20 in of rain fell? The average for May. is 4.60 in. There was rain 011 eight days, and most fell 011 May 0, when there was .24in; and most of the rain was in the early part of the month, only .oin having been recorded in the last fortnight. Auckland had It) days of brilliant sunshine in the second half of the month, though there was not a single day without some sun. The day with the greatest amount was May 9. when there was 9 hours 30 minutes. On that day the sun rose at 0.30 a.m. and set at 4.58 p.m., giving a possible total of sunshine of 10 hours 22 minutes, so that there was not much of that day when the sunshine was not brilliant. During the early part of the month winds were south-westerly, and in the second half south-easterly. The barometer was fairly high on the average, the maximum being 30.51 Dili and the minimum 29.070 in. There was fog 011 seven mornings. The mean shade temperature was 53.92 degrees. The extreme maximum temperature, or the day when it was hottest, was on the 21st, when it was 05.0 degrees. The coldest day was 011 the 9th, when the temperature was 40.5 degrees. On that day, too, the lowest grass reading was recorded. It was 32.5 degrees.
