ASSAULT ON WOMAN.
YOUNG MAN GAOLED. ATTEMPT TO STEAL PURSE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. An assault 011 a woman aged 80 and an attempt to steal her bag resulted in a term of six months' gaol being imposed on John Henry Sewell Nisbet, aged 24, of 110 fixed abode, when be appeared before Mr. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court. Nisbet pleaded guilty to drunkenness, to assaulting Ellen Bowley and to attempting to steal a purse and contents valued at £3 5/ from jlrs. Bowley. He was sentenced to three months' hard labour on each of the main charges. Senior Sergeant Calwell said that as Mrs. Bowley entered the.women's rest room in the Square, Nisbet stepped out and pulled her fur necklet over her face. She cried for help and Nisbet snatched her purse. As Nisbet ran off he was tripped by a man outside and held until the police arrived. Nisbet arrived from New York eighteen months ago. He had 110 previous convictions in New Zealand.
