RENT CHARGES.
In reply to "Fair Play's" letter in the matter of increased rents, and the' Prime Minister's recent utterance on the subject. As a tenant who.se rent was raised 4/(! per week in the year 1935 B.N. (before November) and is now threatened with a further increase of 2/ft per week, I think it is high time that some protection be given those mulcted in'this way, as is proposed by the powers that be in Wellington. Flippant, talk of this matter being "hyperbole" or "just a joke" is no "joke" for those who find the best part of their week's wages going out in rent. There is 110 question that high rents, and the consequent evil of married couples living in rooms, is one of the dark spots of this young country, which should not be supported by decent-minded citizens. Many will have cause to thank our presentGovernment for its humanitarian legislation in the interests of a long-suffering public. All is well with our "brand-new Prime Minister"—wait and see. HOPEFUL.
