UNEMPLOYMENT TAX.
| PAYMENTS BY WAGE-EARNERS FARMERS' UNION COMPLAINT. A matter which is liltely to give rise to considerable discussion at the Auckland Provincial Conference of the New Zealand Farmers' Union next week is the payment of unemployment tax by the ordinary worker on wages as compared with the professional man or interest recipient. For a .long time the union has considered that the wage-earner has been treated unfairly in that no allowance is made for any loss he may incur in any other business in which he may be ' interested. Many men whose farms are i not paying have taken other work and j left their wives and families to carry on the farm, the earnings of the husband contributing to the upkeep of the farm. Bankers, lawyers, doctors, merchants and others who may have farms are allowed to set off losses in one of their activities against gains in another, paying annually only on their net earnings, but the ordinary wage-earner pays his unemployment tax weekly and cannot set off losses against his earnings.
