PARTLY DESTROYED.
OLD AUCKLAND COTTAGE,
ONE-TIME POST OFFICE. A small four-roomed cottage, one of tho oldest dwellings 111 Auckland, situate next tho Grand Hotel, Princes Street, was extensively damaged by fire just after half-past two on Saturday afternoon. Two engines from the city station and one from the Parnell station were soon on the scene and the fire was extinguished in a couple of minutes, the damage being confined to the inside of the cottage. The dwelling is said to be one of the earliest erected in Auckland, and in the very early days was used as Government offices. In the progress of time many up-to-date and modern buildings have been erected in Princes Street, notably the Grand Hotel, University and police station, but the little cottage remained untouched until Saturday. LTp till recently it had been used to house some members of the Grand Hotel staff, but lately had been unoccupied. The dwelling is owned by Hancock and Co., Ltd. Tho insurances were £150 011 the building and £50 011 the contents divided between the New Zealand Insurance Company and tho Commercial Union, Assurance Company.
