A TEN-MILE BRIDGE.

' * I I SWEDEN-DENMARK LINK. I i I A £7,000,000 PLAN. I MALMO (Sweden), i A bridge ten and a half miles ; lonjr and costing 132,000,000 kronor, ( £7,075,200), connection Sweden with Denmark across the Oresund Straits,; is being seriously considered in both countries. Engineering firms say it can be built in six to I j eight years. Government officials are I showing great interest in the plan. I j The bridge would start near this city! j in southernmost Sweden and end on the! Danish island of Amager, near Copen- ! j hagen. Connection from Amager to the j capital would be by tunnel. The Oresund, iis much wider between Malino' and j I Copenhagen than at any other point,' I but the water is shallower and the sea I bottom is firm and able to support heavy caissons. Also there are only four dredged shipping lanes several kilometers apart. Therefore, the bridge I would need only four pivot or ] drawbridge sections for the free passage of boats. 1 ° Of the estimated cost Sweden would contribute 55,000,000 kronor. The bridge would carry a single track electrified ■ railway, a concrete automobile road, j wide enough for three cars abreast and Ia- special track for bicyclists. The main I purpose of the bridge would be to I increase train and automobile traffic I between the Continent and Sweden, but I it also would promote transit freight . and passenger traffic from and to Norway and Finland. Customs offices would be established at either entrance to the bridge and on both sides would be large parking spaces, gasoline stations and automobile repair shops, j Denmark recently completed a much shorter bridge between the Island of I Funen and Jutland.
