MORE SOLID STILL.

Ex-Bankrupt's Defeat of Minister. STORY or A BY-ELECTION. (Received 11 a.m.) PERTH, this day. East Perth by-election for the Legislative Assembly, resulted in the defeat of the Minister of Employment, Mr. J. Kenneally (Labour), by Mr. T. Hughes (Independent) by a majority of 1404 votes. At the general election last February Mr. Hughes defeated Mr. Kenneally by 199 votes. Last January a sequestration order was secured against Mr. Hughes' estate. Following his win in the February election the question of Mr. Hughes' eligibility to sit in Parliament after having been bankrupt arose, and Mr. Kenneally started Court proceedings. Mr. Hughes paid the money he owed and the Court discharged the sequestration order. When Mr. Kenneally persisted with his appeal, Mr. Hughes resigned the seat and the appeal was discontinued. As a result of the new election on Saturday the Labour Government now has a majority of one.
