ROWING.

WEST END CLUB. The small group of supporters of the West End Rowing Cluib who assembled at the clubhouse In St Mary's Bay were treated to some entertaining sculling on Saturday, when the single scull trials for the Bigelow-Farrell Cup were concluded. The course was about three-quarters of a mile as the crow flies, but the majority of the competitors introduced variations of their own, which gave the spectators a great deal more for their money. Water covered the mud flats to a depth of sft, and was consequently "dead." Many of the oarsmen were nearly so at the conclusion of the contest. Starting was by mutual consent, and the races were judged by cluib officials. In the first semi-final B. G. Tupp (6s) beat S. Bigelojv (9s) by a length and a half. Tupp steered the stralghtest course, Bigelow losing his advantage by zigzagging with joyous abandon through a maze of launches aud buoys. Tupp gave a splendid exhibition over the final stretch, and plodded home over the mud to the accompaniment of cheers from his supporters, tired but happy. R. Allum (is) had the better aim in the second semi-flnal, defeating R. Bigelow (9s) by two lengths. Bigelow was doing well in the early stages, but an overpowering desire to Inspect a dinghy moored some yards off the course cost him the advantage of his handicap. R. Gray (4s) and R. Allum (Is) apparently sought to give practical proof of the theory that parallel lines converge, when they contested the third semi-flgal. Allum was so busily employed working out the theorem that he mistrok the finishing line, Gray gaining the decision by half a length. By virtue of his handicap, B. Tupp (6s) was first away in the final with R. Gray (4s), and although Gray made strenuous efforts to catch him he was never again headed. Both competitors steered a horseshoe course, Tupp gaining the decision by over two lengths.
