POVERTY IN RUSSIA.
ADDRESS BY EVANGELIST. Two addresses were given in Auckland yesterday by Mr. J. Edwin Orr, a visiting Irish evangelist, to large audiences at the Town Hail. Mr. " Orr referred to conditions in Russia and said that great progress had been made in that country. The people had been greatly oppressed under the Czars. Certain disabilities had now been removed. That was not due to 'Communism, but to the rationalisation of industry. A greater improvement had occurred in Finland, where there were more indications of prosperity. Mr. Orr said that the people in Russia were on the average worse dressed than a tramp elsewhere. The Soviet had transformed industry and education, but the standard of living was lower than in other parts of Europe, with the exception of perhaps certain Balkan countries. He thought that the Soviet would to a certain extent succeed. He hoped for a greater revolution in Russia through a change of heart and conversion through the recognition of Christ.
