The outstanding feature of the opening series of county cricket matches was the success of two overseas batsmen, C. S. Dempster (New Zealand) and R. C. M. Kimpton (Australia). Dempster, who qualified for Leicestershire and is captain of the team, topscored in both innings against Surrey, at Leicester. He reached three figures— unbeaten—on his second visit to the wickets. Kimpton, who hails from Melbourne, had the distinction of scoring the first century of the season. When he compiled his second hundred, against Gloucestershire, he equalled the Oxford University record of two centuries in a match, created by R. E. Foster in 1900. Results of county games:— Marylebonc: First innings, 170 (Smailes five for 63, Verity four for 50); second, 166 (Hendren 75; Smailes six for 64). Yorkshire: First innings, 269 (Mitchell 57); second, two for GB. Yorkshire won by eight wickets. Kent: First innings, 187 (Mercer six for 63).; second, seven for 473, declared (Ashdown 187). Glamorgan: First innings, 165 (Turnbull 68; Wright five for 41); second, 384 (Turnbull 115). Kent won by 111 runs. Surrey: First innings, 351 (Squires 86, Holmes 79); second, six for 233, declared. Leicester: First innings, 273 (Dempster 76; Watts five for 47); second, six for 192 (Dempster 100 not out). Surrey won on the first innings. Oxford University: First innings, 348 (Kimpton 101, Murray-Wood 100 not out); second, 261 (Kimpton 106; Barnett four for 31). 'Gloucester: First innings, 215 (West four for 27); second, 360 (Neale 134). Oxford won by 34 runs.

In their opening first-class fixture the All-India "cricketers were defeated by Worcestershire by three wickets.
