STORMY VOYAGES.
MAORI SEVERELY BUFFETED. MOTOR SHIP DAMAGED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) LYTTELTON, Sunday. The inter-island steamer Maori, which was delayed in her departure from Wellington and did not arrive until 12.45 . p.m. to-day, met the full force of the gale and tremendous head seas, was heavily buffeted until off Kaikoura, after which the wind and sea moderated and she made good time for the rest of the trip.
The Port Waikato was not so fortunate as the Waliinc, which 011 Saturday experienced difficulty in entering the inner harbour, and the Maori in that she did not escape damage. Captain Holmes decided, when 35 miles soutli of Akaroa, to return to Lytteltoil, as, on account of the violence of the storm, the sea was too big to permit the vessel to enter Akaroa harbour for shelter. About three hours after the ship had been turned a big sea came over her stern, smashing in the door of the niessroom and flooding the galley and officers' cabins. It also shifted the ship's boats slightly. The flagstaff at the stern and grating were carried overboard.
Alarm was caused by the cargo shifting, causing the vessel to list to starboard. However, she reached Lytteltoil Heads and anchored there at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The crew restowed the cargo and trimmed the vessel and Captain Holmes, brought his vessel into the harbour and berthed at 0 p.m. To-d«y the vessel left for Dunedin.
