ROOF TORN AWAY

CARRIED 80 YARDS.

SECOND HOUSE DAMAGED. LARGE HOLE IN WALL. Some conception of the force of some of the gusts even on Saturday afternoon when the gale had passed its worst is given by the fact that part of the roof of a house in Rewa Road, Mount Eden, was torn from its holdings and carried "bodily eighty yards across a block to strike and do considerable damage to a eecond house in Landscape Road, the next street. Though the occupants of both houses were at home, no one was Ihurt. The house at 26, Rewa Road is occupied by Mr. M. Bishop. Half of the roof remained, but some •4ft out of position. The other half, comprising about 40 sheets of iron with the rafters still attached, was whirled into the. air like a piece of paper, to strike the second house. It carried away a large double chimney and then broke in two, one section landing on the lawn on the western side of the house and the other on the eastern side in a yard, where it smashed several boards and broke a window. A large hole was torn in the wall just below a bay window, and a length of rafter, 4in by 2in, pierced the weather boards, the interior lining, and then the floor boards, projecting Bin out under the house. To make matters worse, rain and hail followed the gust, and the contents of Mr. Bishop's house were soaked. Most of the perishable goods were stored in a garage, while the Bishop family spent the week-end with relatives. Despite the damage and the force of the impact, the house in Landscape Road was still tenable after temporary repairs hud. been carried out. Mr. Bishops house, however, will need partial rebuilding.
