FRANCE ELIMINATES CHINA. BRITISH HARD-COURT TITLES. PERRY AND MISS STAMMERS WIN. PARIS, May 3. In the first round of the Davis Cup contest at Paris France eliminated Chiua. The matches resulted:— Singles.—Boussus beat Kho, 6 —o, 6 —o, 6 —l; Destremeau beat Cheng, 6—l, 6 —3, 6—B, 6—3. Doubles.—Borotra and Bernard beat Kho and Gordon Lum, 6 —l, 6—3, 4 —6, (3—2. In the finals of the British hard court tennis championships at Bournemouth, Miss Stammers beat Senorita Lizana, 7 —5, 7 —5, and Perry beat Austin, 6—2, B—6, 6—3. This is Perry's fifth successive win. Critics consider that Perry is as strong as- ever. He played almost flawlessly and volleyed powerfully. Austin, although defeated, was in good form, especially in the second set. HOPMAN IN FORM. MISSES HARTIGAN AND COYNE. SYDNEY, May 3. The City of Sydney tennis championships were played yesterday. In the men's singles Ilopman beat B. J Thompson, 6—o, b—4, 5—7, 6 —4. In the doubles Hopman and N. Turvey beat Bromwicli and Huxley, 6—l, 10—3, 6—3. The women's singles resulted in the defeat of Miss Coyne by Miss Hartigan, 3—6, 6—o, 7—5. In the women's doubles Misses Hartigan and Coyne beat Mrs. Hopman and Miss N. Wynne, 6—4, 6—4. WHAKATANE FINALS. The finals of the Whakatane Presbyterian Tennis Club's lawn tennis singles championship were decided at Whakatane on Saturday. Results:— Men's Championship.—lC. Schofield beat E. Wilson, o—B. Ladies' Championship.—Mrs. D. Cato beat Miss Patterson, 9—i.
