MANY SHEEP STOLEN.
YOUNG MAN'S ADMISSION. COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNE, this day. > The theft of 56 sheep was admitted by Cecil William George Lawton, aged 19, who appeared before Mr. E. Walton, S.M., this morning. Detective MeWhirter stated that accused stole the 6heep from the farmer by whom he was employed, and sold them to butchers and farmers. Although only three charges had been preferred there was evidence that accused had been stealing systematically for some months. In one case lambs had been sold for 5/. The Magistrate: What are lambs worth ? Mr. MeWhirter: About IS/ each. The Magistrate: Surely the farmer who bought thorn would suspect something wrong? Mr. MeWhirter: There is some suggestion that the deal was not all square. Following a plea by counsel, who said a friend was prepared to give employment to accused, sentence was deferred for three months in order to give him an opportunity to make good.
