WOMAN "BOOKIE."
BETS AT BIRKENHEAD. FINE OF £10 IMPOSED. - A Birkenhead shopkeeper; Mrs. Emily Headland, appeared on summons in the Police Court to-day, when she pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker, at Birkenhead, on April 18. V Senior Detective Hall said complaints were received by the police that defendant was taking bets. On April IS Detective F. Brady and Constable Snow called at her shop and interviewed her. She was quite frank and admitted that she had been talcing bets. She admitted taking 23 straight-out bets and laying six doubles on that day, when races were being held at Avondale. This, she, added, she had done to oblige her customers.
Mr. F. W. Schramm, who appeared [ for Mrs. Headland, said she was merely the agent -for a bookmaker, and had only been betting in a small way for a short period. Her husband was ill, and there were two children, and she conceived the idea of doing a little betting to supplement her earnings from the shop. "She has now decided to give the game up, so I would ask that only a small fine be imposed," said counsel.
"These people know they should not do this sort of thing," said the magistrate.
Mr. Schramm: People will bet, if not with this woman then with someone else. There is no way of stopping it. The only way is to control it.
Mrs. Headland was fined £10, and was allowed one week in which to pay.
