Various exporters in Auckland this morning expressed surprise at the news of the Japanese entry to the London butter market. One authority with actual impressions of the Japanese industry expressed no concern as to the menace which Japanese sales in London may have for New Zealand or Australian prices. lie said that the previous output of Japan approximated 2200 tons, and added that there was not much country suited to dairy farming. For this reasons it was hardly likely that Japanese butter could ever seriously compete with the established Antipodean product.
This informant stated tliat Japanese butter was similar to Now Zealand second grade, being light in colour and of waxy texture. It was produced chiefly in Hokkaido, in the north, and had hitherto been exported only to Shanghai, where it had been marketed with obvious care to conceal its country of origin. It was sent in bulk from Japan and repacked in Shanghai. TRADE IMBROGLIO. - Japanese-Australian Outlook "Fairly Serious." TARIFF SITUATION. (ltcceived 12 noon.) TOKYO, May 1.
