BURSARY GRANTS.

TRAINING OF TEACHERS.

REGULATIONS ANNOUNCED,

It is announced that regulations, have now been made in regard to bursaries in fine arts. For the purpose of training suitable persons to become teachers in fine arts in technical schools in New Zealand, the Director of Education may in any year award a bursary in fine arts to any person who is not over 25 years of age, has passed in at least four of the grouped art subjects of the preliminary art examination for the diploma in fine arts granted by the University of New Zealand, has resided in New Zealand for at least one year immediately preceding the date of application, is recommended by the controlling authority of a technical or secondary school in New Zealand as being exceptionally worthy of assistance for the purpose of a bursary, and produces satisfactory' evidence of character, health and suitability for the work of teaching.

The bursary will be tenable at a school of fine arts recognised by the University of New Zealand, and shall be for three years, although the director at his discretion may extend it for a fourth year. Except in special circumstances, approved by the director, the bursary shall not be tenable with or after the tenure of any scholarship, exhibition, studentship or similar award. An allowance at the rate of £10 a year will be made, and, subject to certain conditions, a boarding allowance may also be made. Bursars will be required to regularly attend the classes, and pass the major portion of the test allotted each year.
