PILOT'S ALLEGATION.
Unauthorised Alteration of
Ship's Course.
NORWEGIAN TANKER ON REEF,
BRISBANE, March 24.
At tlie marine inquiry into the grounding of the Norwegian tanker Vardaas on a reef at Point Danger on March 3 the pilot, Mr. J. W. Friend, stated that the course he set overnight had been altered without his knowledge. He was awakened at 4 a.m. by officers discussing a light they had seen on shore. Witness said he went on to the bridge and the vessel struck the reef at C a.m. He discovered that the course he had set had been disregarded for one much closer to the shore. The hearing was adjourned.
