SWIMMING.

QTAHUHU CARNIVAL l M. LEYDON ANOTHER RECORD A COMPETITOR GOES TOO FAST! There was an excellent attendance at the Otahuhu Amateur Swimming Club's carnival at the Tepid Baths last night for the first carnival ever held in the city by the suburbanites. And the crowd soon got on good terms with everybody, for in the initial evefnt on the programme Mona Leydon, in returning the fine figures of 3.59 3-5, broke the Auckland record of 4.10 3-5 for 300 yds by no less than lis. She covered the first 100 yds in 71 2-ss, and 200 yds in 2.35 3-5. Pauline Hoeft's time of 4.10 3-5 for the full distance had stood since April 4, 1922. (Thei'e is no New Zealand record for this distance.) 0

After coming all the way from Wanganui to attempt to lower his own national record of 3.1 2-5, established at Auckland on February 16, 1935, Len. Smith failed by 3 l-5s to improve upon the figures for 220 yds breaststroke. At one stage lie appeared to have a chance, as his time for the-initial 100 yds, 77 2-ss, was quite good enough.

These two Dominion champions were given enthusiastic receptions, and theTe was a more popular demonstration still when Miss Leydon subsequently appeared to win her heat and final of the furlong handicap, in which she was the only woman competing.

There was one extraordinary incident during the programme. The Auckland Centre's handicapping committee now assesses times for all swimmers who enter for carnivals, and has decided that if a competitor swims faster by more than two seconds, disqualification for the particular event is imposed. Last night, in the 50yds novice, A. Hollis (Wa.itema.ta), whose time was given in the official card as 335, won the second heat in SO 1-56, and was not allowed to start in the final.

Westfield Freezing Company's representatives won the Otahuhu business houses relay. At the conclusion of the contest Mr. Kirkliam, manager of the Passenger Transport Company, presented the Passenger Transport Cup to J. B. Grant, captain of the successful team. In the results which follow the abbreviations for the clubs are: Eastern Suburbs (ES), Ponsonby (P), Parnell (Par), North Shore (NS), Otahuhu (0), University (U), Waiteinata (W)j Mount Eden (ME), Pufcekohe (Puke).
