LOCAL BODIES.

NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Nortlicote Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. R. Martin, presiding. > McGregor Fund. —It was decided to open a subscription list at the council office towards the McGregor national fund. , Heavy Traffic.—The Auckland City Council remitted the sum of £100 18/10, the Nortlicote proportion of heavy traffic license fees collected for the quarter ended February 28. The Mayor stated that the amount received for the year was £446 3/7, or £40 more than last year.

Church Street. —A deputation, of whicli Mr. J. W. Fletcher was spokesman, supported a petition signed by 51 ratepayers and users of Church Street, requesting that this street should be placed in proper repair. The deputation was informed that the council had already decided to proceed with necessary work in this-locality.

Anzac Service.—The usual evening service is to be held on Anzac Day and arrangements are to be made by ft committee comprising Messrs. R. Martin (Mayor), C. A. Clark, N. S. Davidson, L. G. Gimblett and A. Facer.

Transfers.—The sum of £500 was transferred from the general account to the waterworks maintenance account to cover the cost of the electrification of the pumping plant at Lake Pupuke. A transfer of £75 was also made to the sanitation account against the annual recurring deficit.

Street Telephones.—Mr. H. G. McCrca, of Princes Street, wrote stressing the need of a street telephone between the hotel and the wharf approach. It was decided to inform the writer that the Post and Telegraph Department several months ago undertook to provide a callbox at the corner of Queen and King Streets. The attention of the Department is to be drawn to the fact that the facility had not yet been installed.

North Shore Drainage.—lt was agreed to attend the conference at Devonport tomorrow (Thursday) evening at 7.45 o'clock to discuss drainage proposals affecting the North Shore area.

Fire Prevention. —It was stated that steps to be taken during fire. prevention week had been brought under the notice of residents by means of circular.

PAPATOETOE TOWN BOARD

The 'Papatoetoe Town Board met last evening, tile chairman, Mr. W. J. Nicholson, presiding.

Great South Road Footpath.—A request that the board should torni a footpath from the corner of Huia Road to the entrance to his section and to attend to the etormwater drainage from his and the adjoining vacant section was made by a Great South Road ratepayer. Mr. W. A. Cairns stated that, us the section in front of which the path would pass was vacant any work done at present would probably have to be reconstructed within a year. The chairman, Mr. Nicholson, pointed out that the footpath on that side of the road had been formed to permanent levels for sonic distance, in connection with South Road beautifying schemes, to form a crass verge to property frontages, but it had heen allowed to become overgrown with weeds. With regard to the stormwater drainage, the board decided to notify the parties concerned that in the case of boundary drains a portion of the cost was borne by the owner of the property. The matter of the footpath was referred to the works committee.

Accounts. —The fortnightly statement showed that the bank overdraft was £825, while accounts totalling nearly £400 were passed for payment last evening, making a total of £1219. The chairman of the finance committee, Mr. L. J. Kendall, stated that the board had budgeted for a reduction of £500 in the bank overdraft in the current year's estimates and the figure on March 31 should bo just under £1000, which would mean that the board had attained its object.

Practice Hockey Ground.—An application by the local hockey club for the use of a flood-lighted hockey ground for night practice at a season's rental of £4 4/ was referred to the reserves committee for report.

MOUNT ROSKiLL ROAD BOARD

Mr. C. M. McCullough presided at the meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board last night.

New Member. —Mr. A. J. Fulljames, the newly-elected member, took his seat and was welcomed by the chairman. He was appointed a member of the waterworks and parks committees.

New Buildings.—There are 21 buildings in the course of erection in the district of a total value of £4257.

Drivers' Licenses. —The figures for driving licenses submitted by the inspector were considered very satisfactory, 1221 having been issued to date this year, compared with 1080 last year.

Board's Assessor: —The Valuation Department asked the board to take the statutory steps to appoint an assessor for the district to act at the forthcoming Assessment Court. The chairman said that nominations would be received by the clerk, and the clcction of a person to fill the position would be held at the annual meeting of ratepayers next May.

Mount Albert Road. —The board has received authority from the Main Highways Board for the expenditure of £2992 17/5 for paving with concrete a portion of Mount Albert Road, of which £2224 13/1 represents the Highway Board's subsidy of £3 for £1. The work has been let to Messrs. Grinter Brothers, and will be under the supervision of Mr. Greville Walker, C.E.

GLEN EDEN TOWN BOARD

The ordinary meeting of the Glen Eden Town Board was held on Monday, Mr A. J. Routley presiding

Poppy Day.—An application from the Western Suburbs Returned Soldiers' Association fo£ permission to hold a street collection on Friday, April 24, in aid of Poppy Da> funds, was granted.

Recreation Ground. —An application from the Glenora Football Club for the use of the recreation ground and training shed for the coming season was granted, and the board's consideration of a proposal from the football club that the recreation ground be flood-lighted was promised.

Life-saving Club.—The board decided to make a donation of £1 1/ to the Pilia Lifesaving Club.

Hall Loan.—The sanction of the Local Government Loans Board to the proposal to borrow £3500 to erect a town hall in terms of the original plans and specifications was received. The necessary advertisements will appear in the Press, and a poll of ratepayers will be taken on Wednesday, April 22, 1936.

FRANKLIN POWER BOARD,

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, Tuesday. The monthly meeting of the Franklin Electric Power Board was held at Pukekohe to-day, the chairman, : Mr. John Dean, presiding over a full attendance.

Line Construction.—The engineer, Mr L. G. Sharp, reported that a 11,000-volt extension ancl transformer sub-station at Onewhero had been completed, and livened on February 27, and that the reticulation of Bell's estate, Mangatawhiri, had been completed, the work consisting of 43 main line poles, 190 chains o£ 11,000-volt wiring and 120 chains of low tension wiring with three transformer sub-stations. New Lines.—The engineer recommended the construction of an 11,000-volt loop line from the intersection of the Kohe-kohe-Waiuku and Patumnhoe-Waiuku lines at Fernleigh, through Waiuku to the Sandspit Road. He stated that tljis would enable the west coast and Taurangaruru lines to be connected to the Aka Aka line, thus relieving the heavily-j loaded Kohekolie line of 10 miles of hisjfv

tension line supplying 12 transformers and would also give better eervicft for voltoge regulation and a better chancre of supply to Awhitu in case of line trouble. Ihe engineer was given authority to have the work carried out, the estimated cofet being £430. ' New Motor Trucks.—With reference to the motor trucks used for line construction and maintenance the engineer reported that the staff were finding it increasingly difficult to give manitcnance work on the older lines the ? te " t o " it required on account of the ; large amount of new construction work and new service lines which had been undertaken during the past nine months. Ihere weie four trucks for line construction, services and line maintenance, and during the past four pionths these had travelled 18,345 miles. Mr. Sharp recommended that the board should call tenders for an additional half-ton truck, and also should replace one threequarter-ton truck with a more powerful vehicle. Authority to call tenders for the new vehicles given.
