(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")
DUNEDIN, this day,
At tlie annual meeting of the New Zealand Drug Company the chairman of directors, Mr. W. F. Edmohd, said that to cope with ail increasing demand for chemicaL fertilisers it had been found necessary to make additions to the Westfield Works at Auckland. A new sulphuric acid plant 011 most modern lines was now in course of construction and should be completed in a few months' time. This addition would give ample scope for the greater manufacture of sulphuric acid and superphosphate, and would place the company in an excellent position to meet the needs of expanding business. LIVE STOCK MARKETS. TAUMARUNUI CATTLE FAIR. (From Our Own Correspondent.) TAUMARUNUI, Tuesday. Great interest was taken in the cattle fair held to-day and the large yarding of 1500 good quality cattle attracted a large number of buyers and keen competition. Buyers were present from Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, Waikato, Te Kuiti, Kopaki, Oliura and Kaetihi, and there was a very large attendance of farmers. One Dannevirke buyer purchased 400 store and forward steers, mostly Aberdeen Angus, and these will be forwarded to Hawke's Bay on Friday by special train. One line of 46 Aberdeen Angus steers realised £8 and a smaller line of the same class of cattle made £8 1/. Three and a half-year-old Aberdeen Angus steers sold up to £7 and Shorthorn steers made £6 12/6. The best fat bullocks changed hands at £9 8/ and fat cows made up to £5 15. A large proportion of the yarding was purchased by outside buyers and freezing works buyers operated freely for killable steers, boner cows and potter bulls, of which more than 50 came forward, the highest price realised being £7. The sale \Vas an exceptional good one for vendors and all quality cattle found a ready market. The following prices were realised:— Fat bullocks, £8 15/ to £9 8/; fat steers, £7 3/ to £7 17/6; fat cows, £3 15/, £4 4/, £4 18/ to £5 15/; light Hereford cows, £3 7/ to £3 18/; forward bullocks, £7 to £8; forward steers, £5 5/ to £7. Four and a half-year-old Aberdeen Angus bullocks. £7 15/ to £8 1/; three and a half-vear-old Aberdeen Angus steers £6 15/ to £7 10/; two and a half-year-old Aberdeen Angus steers, £6 5/ to £7; store steers, £4 to £5 10/; Hereford steers, £6 5/ to £6 7/; Shorthorn steers, up to £6 5/; store cows, £2 15/ to £3 5/; boner cows, 12/ to 35/; empty cows, 25/ to £3 15/; empty heifers, £3 to £3 18/; bulls, £2 to £7. TE KAUWHATA VALUES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, Monday. A large yarding of beef and store cattle came forward to-day for Messrs. G. W. Vcrcoe and Company's fortnightly sale at Te Kauwhata, and under a strong demand, practically a total clearance was effected at values which showed an improvement on those ruling during the past few weeks. The advertised line of store bullocks met with a keen demand, and readily changed hands at rates above the vendor's expectations. An average yarding of dairy cattle was offered, and anything showing quality met with strong competition at firm prices.
