FUTURE NEEDS.
SITE AT ELLERSLIE. AUCKLAND GRAMMAR SCHOOL AREA OF TEN ACRES. The intention to take an area of ten acres adjoining the Great South Road near Ellerslie under the Public Works Act as a future site for a new secondary school has been announced by the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works. The land is in the One Tree Hill Borough, some distance from the intersection of Jubilee Road, Ellerslie.
The problem of the continued congestion in the Auckland Grammar School has been under consideration by the hoard for some time. Several years ago the establishment -of a grammar school near Ellerslie was suggested, but the authorities decided on the erection of the Otalnihu Technical High School.
The chairman of the Auckland Grammar School Board, Professor A. P. W. Thomas, said that no, plans had been made for the construction of the school on the selected site, but he agreed that it was an ideal one for the purpose. It was less than half a mile from the Ellerslie railway station, and a new school would eventually he necessary to meet the needs of the eastern suburbs. The Otahuhu School would not be affected.
At the Auckland Grammar School there were now 950 pupils, though the school had really been built to accommodate 600. This was ail indication that steps would have to bo taken in the future to relieve what might become serious congestion.
