ITALIAN MARBLE

SANCTIONS STOP IMPORTS. The imposition of sanctions has seriously affected the importation of marble into New Zealand from Italy. Mr. W. Parkinson, marble and granite merchant, stated this morning that before sanctions were imposed last year •he had a buyer in Italy, but he was now located in Brussels. Writing under date of February last, he said he was afraid sanctions would not be removed this year. Mr. Parkinson said that practicably all the marble used for outdoor monumental work came from Italy. New Zealand marble was unsuitable for outdoor work, but it was a fine stone for interior decorations, lobbies and vestibules. Referring to marble produced, in Belgium, lie said it was like the New Zealand stone —unsuitable for outside work.
