STABLE AND TRACK NOTES

IMPROVEMENTS LIKELY. The Waikato Racing Club intends to make some alterations to their buildings after the next meeting at Te Rapa. The stewards' stand is to be extended, and it will contain much move accommodation for members, including a luncheon room, etc. The present stewards' stand is inadequate aiul the club is to be congratulated on taking this step. LOOKED WELL. Killadar was a starter in the Ohinemuri Cup on Saturday and he made quite a respectable showing till the straight. He was about third all the way till this point, but then drifted, and was sixth at the finish. Killadar looked nice, and it will be surprising if his owner, Mr. W. H. Wack'row, is not rewarded with a stake before long. Killadar is a good horse, particularly up to a mjle. DID NOT STAY ON. Enge was installed favourite for the Ohinemuri Cup on Saturday. He quickly hit the front and endeavoured to win the race from end to end, but half a mile from home Bonny Gay ran past him, and she had a good break on liim as the field turned for home. Enge failed to go on and was well beaten at the finish. However, his turn will come again. FIRST START IN DOMINION. Raepata, a two-year-old colt by Brazen from Capsina, had his first race in New Zealand on Saturday, when he contested the Karangahake Handicap at Paeroa. He is a nice-looking youngster, but is not ready yet. He was never prominent and eventually finished seventh. At the Canterbury Park meeting in Sydney last January he ran third in a two-year-old event, so that he is not without prospects. FAILED AT PAEROA. Prince Colossus ran two great races at the Te Rapa meeting, finishing third in the big event each day. On those jierformances ho was thought to have an excellent chance in the Franklin Cup, but ho was not started. He made his reappearance in the Ohinemuri Cup at Paeroa on Saturday and was always a long way back, being one of the last to finish. Prince Colossus is engaged at the Bay of Plenty meeting next Saturday, and he may do better there. . WILL DO BETTER. Mazir developed a corn in one of his feet and had not raced for some weeks till Saturday, when he was produced in the' Ohinemuri Cup. He went well for over half the distance, when he got a knock which sent liim back last, and he finished there. He looked a bit big on it, but his effort suggests that it should not be long before he is back at his best again, ilazir is a good sort when at his best and the racing round about Easter should find him approaching it again. FENCED BADLY. Huskie, on his effort, at Pukekohe, when he won tile Puni Hurdles, looked to be a certainty at Paeroa on Saturday, but he hardly jumped a feijce correctly. He made a bad jump at the fence in the straight the first time and lost a lot of ground, and when he endeavoured to go with Scotch Nation over the concluding part the latter beat him over the last fence and held him off comfortably. Huskie, however, will improve in this department, and more races over the battens are sure to go his way shortly. FINISHED ON WELL. Tahurangi put up a good performance to finish second in the Ohinemuri Cup .on Saturday. He was one 'of the rear division till the top was reached, and then commenced to move up. He was still a long way back at the home turn, but. came on in great style to finish two lengths behind the winner. Tahurangi is trained by R. Barlow at New Plymouth, and as this horse is very fit at present he should have no difiiculty in placing him to advantage before the season is much further advanced. SCORED NICELY. Namakia is very speedy when right, and she was at her best when produced in the Paeroa Handicap at the Ohinemuri meeting on Saturday. She quickly ran to the front, and though Lucidus was with iher till the straight she then left him and went on to win by a neck from Royal Secret. Namakia was a good filly last season, and she nearly defeated Gay Blonde in the Great Northern Guineas, one mile, the latter only catching her in the last few yards. Namakia should be in the picture on other occasions before the autumn racing is through. . r A PROMISING JUMPER. Scotch Nation made his appearance as a hurdler at the Ohinemuri meeting. He went to the front after about half a mile had been covered, and though challenged by Huskie in the straight he went on to score comfortably. He jumped like an old stager and never made a mistake throughout. Scotch Nation'w«s good on the flat, | and his performance at Paeroa on Saturday was most impressive. He lias started at the right season of the year to win big money at winter racing, and he has only to keep sound to be well in the picture in the important hurdle races during the next few months. A race like the Brighton Hurdles would not be beyond him, judging by the manner in which he finished on Saturday. ANOTHER FOR R. HANNON. Matoru. who won the second division of the Awaiti Handicap at Paeroa on Saturday, is a three-year-old geldmg belonging to R. Hannon, and is trained bv P. Tutchen at Te Rapa. He had previously shown promise when he ran second to Sweet Rose in the Trial Stakes at Te Rapa last month. On Saturday lie jumped away well and was content to wait on Little Ruse till the straight entrance, and when asked for an effort went away to win handsomely. Matoru is a well-bred gelding, being by Acre from Katuscha, 1 who traces back to the Juliet family. The win was a popular one, and patrons were [ pleased to see Hannon again getting on | the winning list. Modern Maid won for him at Te Rapa, which was his first success for a long time, and now Matoru I carries on the good work.

A LIKELY SORT. Littles Ruse, a maiden, showed plenty of pace in tlje second division of the Awaiti Handicap at Paeroa on Saturday. He quickly ran to the front and led well into the straight, where Matoru went past him. but he held on in great tstyle to get second from Cyllaros. Little Ruse is by Little England from Peruse, by Nassau (sire of Surveyor) from Kinetic, who produced Adalene to Little England. He is trained by A. McGregor at Paeroa, and more will be heard of this fellow. 1 GASCILLE DISAPPOINTS. Gascille ran a good race in the hurdles at Pukekohe recently, when he finished third, and on that performance he looked to be one of the hardest to beat in the steeplechase at Paeroa on Saturday. He jumped all right till he reached the fence in the straight the second time and struck it hard, nearly losing his rider. He went on again, but that mistake appeared to take the steam out of him, and lie was never dangerous afterwards. His display was rather disappointing, for he is usually a very good fencer. He may do better at Ellerslie at Easter. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. Nominations for the autumn meeting of the Auckland Racing Club ami forfeits for the Great Northern Oaks, Great Northern Champagne Stakes and Great Northern St. Leger Stakes close with the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spence, at 5 p.m. next Friday. BAY OF PLENTY CLUB. i Acceptances for the first day of the Bay of Plenty Jockey Club's annual meeting close with Messrs. Blora field and Co., Shortland Street, Auckland, at 5 p.m., or with the secretary, Mr. S. G. Willcock, Tauranga, at 9 p.m., to-day.
