DEATH OF GAY CHIEF.
COLT STRIKES A POST. Gay Chief fell in the Pacific Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, and broke his neck, dying immediately. The accident occurred after the field had gone two furlongs, and in his fall the colt struck a post. His rider, P. Burgess, received concussion, but later regained consciousness. The owner, Mr. F. Ehrhorn, of Hawora, rushed out to the track to see his horse, and fell down in a faint. He recovered, but again became unconscious, this tinic over the horse. He was taken to the ambulance room, where lie had a third fainting spell, and was kept for observation. He was later admitted to hospital. Gay Chief, who was by Gay Shield from Persis, had started on fifteen occasions this season for two firsts, a second and seven thirds. He was a most promising youngster, and his loss is a severe one.
