"BEWARE OF THE DOG."
As one, the nature of whose occupation occasions the necessity of calling ui)on occupiers of many houses throughout Auckland city and suburbs, may I be permitted, through the columns of your paper, to inquire why it is necessary to post up at front gates the notice "Beware of the dog." Is it fair or reasonable to knowingly permit a dangerous dog freedom of the yard and lawn and imagine that a stupid notice fiees the owner of the animal of all responsibility should the brute attack a caller ? A notice "Beware of the dog" is an open admission or an advertisement that the do" is dangerous to all and sundry and is apparently responsible for the exhibition of such a notice as the result of an attack upon any individual on some previous occasion. To iiua.£in6 thut a notice warning a caller is sufficient protection in itself is surely most stupid and would it not be exercising a greater degree of forethought if the. owners of known savage dogs were to chain or muzzle 6uch° animals. In view of the increasing attacks on members of the community by vicious dogs, the time has undoubtedly arrived when a greater measure of responsibility should be placed upon the owners for the protection of the public generally.
