BRITISH CARS.

MAIMY BOUGHT IN N.Z. OVER 8000 LAST YEAR. DAIRYMEN TO BENEFIT? (Special.—By Air Mail.) LONDON, February 7. The British Press has given exceptional prominence to the fact, revealed in a Press communique by the New Zealand Dairy Board, that New Zealand during 1935 became for the first time the biggest, buyer of .British motor cars. She bought 8225 British cars valued at £952,620 —an increase of 56 per ccnt on 1934. South Africa was second with £809,241 worth. In a message of appreciation to the Dairy Board, Sir Herbert Austin, the chairman of the Austin Motor Company, Ltd., said:—"New Zealand's imports of British cars during 1935 show such a large increase that all British manufacturers will be compelled to vote for and do all in their power to foster trade reciprocity with the Dominion. No other Dominion or colony has done more than New Zealand to cncourage the purchase of British cars." Mr. W. E. Rootes (deputy-cliairman of the Humber-Hillman-Commer group) telegraphed:—"The striking increase in the export of British cars to New Zealand provides welcome evidence 'of the determination of the people of the Dominion to give effect to the spirit of the Ottawa agreements. Those engaged in the British motor industry will not be unmindful of the fact that New Zea-

land's capacity to buy British cars is dependent on our support of licr great dairying industry."

Mr. J. Lord, managing director of Motor.-, Ltd., said:—"The exports to New Zealand of Morris cars for 1935 show an increase of 83 per cent over 1934. Lord Nuffield has made several world tours, embracing all the countries to which Morris cars are exported. As recently as last year he visited New Zealand, and at the present moment he is again on his way to that country. This is evidence of the value he places on that market."

is unquestionable that improving British exports to the Dominion are having a noticeable effect on New Zealand's good will in the Homeland.
