HARDY CLIMBERS.
BOYS AND A VETERAN. bare footed mountaineers. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAWERA, Monday. Two Hawera boys, Jock Murray, aged 11, and his brother Hardy, aged 14, climbed from the Dawson Falls Hostel to Fantham Peak, Mount Egmont, bare footed yesterday. They were accompanied "by their 16-year-old brother, Trevor, who wore light shoes and an ordinary lounge suit. . The climb was made under fair conditions in three hours. The two younger boys carried no kit and were di essed in shorts, shirts and pullovers. After an hour's halt they returned safely to the hostel. Hardy complained of foot-sore-ness and put on his- shoes to return, but Jock was ready to face the sharp scoria. The feat of the boys was eclipsed by the 85-year-old Taumarunui veteran Mr. Jack Allen, who on Saturday climbed bare footed over the rocks and scona from Stratford Mountain House to the sjuinhiit of Egmont. Mr. Allen is believed to be the oldest climber to reach the summit, bare footed or otherwise. Accompanied by a guide he took live hours to climb and three hours in ordinary shoes to descend. He was not distressed by Shis achievement.
