EMPLOYMENT ENDS.
TRANSPORT BOARD'S WORK.
USEFUL GANG AFFECTED,
Works provided for under a schedule approved by the Auckland Transport Board last year will be completed on March 31 next, stated a report by the manager of the Auckland Transport Board, Mr. A. E. Ford, which was presented at a meeting of the board held this morning. _ Mr. Ford explained that the board had since approved of the reconstruction of Victoria Avenue and the work was well in hand. Forty men were engaged. He recommended that the gang be retained until the work was completed towards the end of June and that the remainder of the subsidised men, 30 in all, be given notice of the termination of "thenemployment to take effect at the end of the present month, the board having other work at which they could be profit, ably employed. Mr. E. J. Plielan said he hoped something would be done in the meantime for the men who were to be dispensed with. Mr* F. E. Lark said the officer in charge had reported from time to time of the good work being done by the men in question. He suggested that the chairman of the board, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, should make a recommendation to the Minister of Public Works 011 the men's behalf. The chairman said he would make a recommendation as suggested. The reports concerning the men's work had been consistent. They were a useful gang. Mr. J. A. C. Allum said the men were specially selected by the board for the j work which they had been engaged on. The report wa's adopted.
