On January 1, 1036, according to "The Motor Ship," there were 226 large motor ships of 1,325,000 tons on order, compared with 131 of 816,000 tons a year ago. One hundred and thirty-one motor ships of 752.000 tons gross were completed in 1030, compared with 87 ships of 483,000 tons gross in 1934, an increase of 50 per cent. All these tigures refer to world tonnage. Withiu the past three months 152 ships of all types have been ordered, totalling 842,000 tons. Of these, 101 of 597,000 tons are motor ships. About 55 per cent of the tonnage ordered during the period in question is for British owners. LAUNCH OF 10.000-TON TANKER. Measures to safeguard the Cunard White Star liner Queen Mary were taken when a 10,200 tons oil tanker was launched from a berth alongside the liner on January 9. The stern of the Queen Mary protruded 100 ft out of the fitting-out basin into the Clyde, and lay in the path of the tanker's travel as she left the launching ways. To swing her clear the tanker was weighted on the port side with drag chains of 480 tons. Immediately she was floated the weight of the chains swung the tanker into midstream, where anchors were dropped to prevent her drifting into the liner. The tanker was the Comanchee, built to the order of the Anglo-American Oil Company. It is the biggest Britisli-built motor ship ever constructed exclusively for the transport of lubricat.ng oils.
