BRITISH TRADE REVIEW

STOCK EXCHANGE DULL. COMMODITIES BRIGHTER. WOOL SALE PROSPECTS. (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, March 7. The general tone of the Stock Exchange is dull rather than reactionary. The commodity markets, however, are blighter. Copper, lead, tin, rubber and cotton are all higher. There is no doubt thei-e will be a very keen demand for Merinos at the London wool sales. Bradford stocks are low. The sales are generally expected to show a 5 per cent advance on .the January series. Part of such advance lias already been made at Bradford, where consumption continues good, tending to stimulate keenness. London supplies of crossbreds are regarded as small for the time of year. Importers consider it unlikely they will be able to buy New Zealand wools any cheaper than at present prices. On the contrary, an advance of 5 per cent is forecasted. Fine crossbred types, medium and low crosbreds, will probably advance 5 to 7% per cent. A substantial demand for slipes is expected, as stocks are low. Yorkshire has fair quantities bought at London since the January sales. The disposal of the New Zealand clip is obviously proceeding at a faster rate than last year. Most purchases appear to be for use, not speculation. Cheaper Butter. The general tendency of butter is for! lower levels, a feature of the week being activity in under-grade butter, which is selling nicely within 2/ of top qualities. Danish also is lower. Meat Trade Unsettled. The aftermath of the Smithfield strike is still affecting meat. Heavy accumulated supplies of home-killed still being cleared at lower prices. The market is likely to recede further, as over a million Australian and New Zealand carcases are afloat.
